Winter's Blues

"Winter's Blues" by Simonne Roy. Oil on panel, 12" x 8," $650
I drove by this pasture for years, waiting for the right conditions, and finally got them!
The colors used in painting snow are more subtle and in many ways easier to mix than the myriad greens of spring and summer. Although fewer colors are found in the snowy landscape, the values of snow can be tricky and the artist still has to decide if it is a "sunny day painting" or a "cloudy day painting" and adjust the palette accordingly. I decided this was predominantly a cloudy day and what captured my eye was the sunlight coming from between the clouds to illuminate a triangular edge of the creek bed.
