During my two week artist residency at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (now a national park), my paintings focused on the natural beauty of the lake, ponds and dunes. At the end of my stay, I wanted to depict the reality of the place and show that the park borders on private land and a steel mill, the park's neighbors.
This was painted on the Fourth of July. I was standing on Porter Beach looking West and behind me (I didn't notice until after I finished) a crowd was gathering on the beach for fireworks.
